The Theatre Arts sector in Trinidad and Tobago (TT) comprise practitioners who are trained formally and informally, and/or have experience in their respective fields. Despite being qualified and experienced, this is a working section of the population who continue to earn significantly below the minimum wage, which effective December 2019 was increased to TT$17.50.
In an effort to address this objectionable practice, the National Drama Association of Trinidad and Tobago (NDATT) is initiating a series of activities aimed towards the growth and development of a theatre industry in TT. These include:
1. Research and data collection;
2. Stakeholder consultations and forums, inclusive of practitioners, state agencies, educational institutions and private sector sponsors and investors;
3. Raise awareness of the employment opportunities in the theatre sector for non-practitioners eg administration, finances, accounts, legal, and marketing;
4. Standardisation of best practices through the development, implementation and enforcement of new and existing policies and guidelines;
5. Encourage investment in Theatre Arts, including necessary amendments to the Corporation Tax Act 75:02, which does not clearly identify theatre, and as such the tax incentive remains under-utilised.
We invite you to take a few moments to fill out the forms below. Whether you’re a theatre arts practitioner or not, you can contribute to the conversation now!
